Sunday, 14 December, 2025 | 13:00 - 20:00
Join the OPEN CAN symposium and look back on the year in which Clublokaal was founded, shaped and took root in Breda. We will celebrate what we have achieved so far, reflect on this special time and look ahead to how we can continue to grow as a collective from here.
Together, we will explore what collective organisation means in practice, from shared values to concrete working methods. We invite you to contribute your ideas, help build and explore how Clublokaal can be an open space where art, community and solidarity continuously reinforce each other.
Creators, partners, participants and new visitors come together during OPEN CAN to meet each other, share insights and forge new connections. You will return home inspired, energised and well nourished!
We invite everyone attending the symposium to bring a (filled) tin can.
An ordinary can, a special can, one you happen to have lying around…
Your CAN is indispensable!

In preparation for OPEN CAN and our OPEN BOOK publication, we've created a questionnaire about Clublokaal. We'll use the answers to these questions to compile a Collective Organizing Almanac. Want to help us? Complete the questionnaire here!
Barbara T’Jonck is a theatre maker with a background in philosophy. She works as a performer, dramaturg and writer across a wide range of forms such as socially engaged art, documentary theatre and opera. Her work explores, among other things, fictive collectivity, the power of voices and activating performative strategies.
Tetsuya is a Japanese dancer and pantomime performer who presents his comic choreography Fish Scooping. He placed second in a Japanese dance championship and is exploring how his performance can connect with Dutch culture. Tip: pay extra close attention to his expressive facial mime during the performance!
Spotlight Team International Art is an independent organisation based in Breda that uses art to support human rights and community building. They work in the Netherlands, Gaza, Syria and other parts of the diaspora. Their work supports minorities, refugees and young artists. Through creative projects they create safe spaces for expression, dialogue and solidarity.
Bas Blaasse is a writer and researcher studying how art and visual culture relate to ecological and social realities. In 2025 he is conducting research at Platform BK on collective art practices in the Netherlands. He has a background in philosophy and documentary photography and is a member of Level Five.
Sakmez is a student collective formed by students of the St. Joost art academy in Breda. On the last Wednesday of every month they organise an evening at Clublokaal in which they explore the theme “searching homebase.” They do this by inviting young makers to show work, gather, create and talk together.
laura is an expressive graphic designer, passionate about experimenting with various tools to explore concepts, ideas and stories. her main interests are physical publication design, archiving, production, exhibition design and community-focused projects. laura uses design as a tool to connect with more people. Attempting to use her art as a way to express the experiences of others, developing a true bond through sharing their stories. Clubokaal is lucky with laura as our very first intern!
Lenn Cox is a community organiser, designer, educator, programme maker and karateka, trained in the ArtEZ MA Practice Held in Common. She investigates practices of solidarity and self-organisation and uses clothing as a ritual logbook. Through projects and learning environments she facilitates collective forms of knowledge sharing.
Reza Afisina is a new-media and performance artist from Depok (ID) and has been the artistic director of ruangrupa’s ArtLab since 2008. He was co-artistic director of documenta fifteen (2022) and co-initiator of ruruHaus in Kassel. In addition, he is active within Gudskul, the collective learning platform in Jakarta.
Angga Cipta Praditama (ACip) is a Jakarta-based visual artist affiliated with ruangrupa Artlab, Serrum, CutAndRescue and Gudskul. He makes illustrations, mixed media and installations inspired by everyday urban experiences. His work focuses on public space and the social dynamics of everyday life.
Sunflower Soup is an artist collective that has connected art and activism since 2021. They create banners, actions and visual interventions on climate, housing and anti-racism. Their work combines artistic creation with direct political engagement.
The Seven collective is a group of Master's students from different cultural backgrounds who create participatory experiences that bring people together through conversation, crafts and socialising. Their pop-up café Kulti-sip recreates the atmosphere of a cosy living room chit-chat and encourages reflection on cultural traditions and activities.
Lea ter Meulen's books are part of the Clublokaal collective library. Lea works at WORM Rotterdam.
Admission is free. Food is offered on a voluntary donation basis. Donations can be made by debit card at the bar. All food is vegetarian, with vegan options available.
The symposium will take place throughout the Clublokaal building. Many activities will take place in the large hall on the ground floor. There are doorsteps, which may make wheelchair access slightly more difficult. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair-accessible toilet in the building yet.
There are paid parking spaces directly opposite the building. Clublokaal is also accessible on foot; it is about a 10-minute walk from Breda station.
The language of the symposium is English. However, there will also be room for questions and discussion in Dutch.
Do you have specific questions about accessibility or other questions regarding the symposium? Please feel free to contact us at: kloosterlaan138@gmail.com.
Clublokaal is supported by De Gemeente Breda, Provincie Noord-Brabant, and Stichting KLEIO.
